ISAGO Jewelry & Lab Grown Diamonds
What are Lab-Grown diamonds and are they genuine and real?
Lab-grown diamonds are Chemically, physically, and optically, identical to natural or mined diamonds. They're real diamonds with the same crystal structure and sparkle as natural or mined diamonds. Lab-grown diamond hardness is identical to natural or mined diamonds; a 10 in mohs scale.
The only thing that differs lab-grown diamonds from natural or mined diamonds is its origin.
Lab-grown diamonds are “grown” inside a lab using technology to replicate the natural diamond growing process. An analogy; lab-grown diamonds are like hydroponic tomatoes, instead of tomatoes grown from the earth or soil. Both yield edible tomatoes!
Can tou tell the difference between a Lab-Grown Diamond and a natural one?
Lab grown diamonds appear identical to a mined natural diamond, most people and even jewelers won't be able to tell the difference.
However, jewelers who are also trained gemologists may be able to tell whether a diamond is lab-grown with the aid of microscopes and special equipment. To accurately identify lab grown diamonds from a natural one, an accurate analysis from a gemological laboratory is needed.
Can a diamond tester detect Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-made diamonds have the same thermal and electrical conductivity as mined diamonds, so it will test and pass a typical diamond tester test.
However, there are instances of a lab grown diamond that tests as a synthetic moissanite on a diamond tester; that uses probes and dual thermal electrical conductivity. This phenomenon occurs specific only to lab-diamonds produced by HPHT (high pressure, high temperature). Why? Despite being the same material, HPHT diamonds can contain Boron, a trace element that is uncommonly found in natural diamonds, but it’s used during HPHT process and therefore causing boron to be trapped within the structure of a growing or forming lab diamond.
What is boron? Boron is an extremely rare trace-element found in natural diamonds occurring less than 0.01% of the time; also known as type 2b diamonds. The presence of boron in diamond gives a blue tinge or nuance, its presence also alters the diamond's electrical conductivity, making a diamond a semiconductor. Thus, causing a false reading on a diamond tester that uses probes to measure thermal conductivity on diamonds to sort diamonds from simulants. With such indecisive results, it is best to bring your lab diamonds to a gemological laboratory with extensive tools to further verify the authenticity of your diamond.
Isn't a Lab-Grown Diamond just a fake diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are not fakes. Typically, fake diamonds are what gemologist called simulants.
According to GIA or Gemological Institute of America, the definition of simulants is as follows:
‘The jewelry industry uses the term “simulant” to refer to materials, such as CZ, that look like another gem and are used as its substitute but have very different chemical composition, crystal structure and optical and physical properties.’
Is it more ethical to buy Lab-Grown Diamonds instead of natural diamonds?
Technically, yes! Diamonds grown in a lab are never "blood diamonds" and have a smaller environmental footprint than mined diamonds.
Are Lab-Grown Diamonds sustainable?
To be brutally honest, lab grown diamonds are not 100% sustainable. They need energy to grow.
Isago is conscious and aware about issues peterning sustainability and will try our best to minimize carbon footprints in other forms. Mindfulness and taking small actions are key to being sustainable!
Do Lab-Grown Diamonds get cloudy?
Lab-grown diamonds used in ISAGO are VVS-VS in clarity. They do not get cloudy.
Are Lab-Created Diamonds worth anything?
Lab Grown diamonds certainly have value for their appearance and durability, and as we've mentioned they are exactly the same as natural diamonds in chemical make-up and hardness.
How are Lab-Grown Diamonds made?
Gem quality lab grown diamonds are formed using either these two processes: HPHT and CVD.
HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This process mimics the way that diamonds grow in nature, subjecting carbon to high temperatures and pressing it together.
CVD stands for Chemical Vapor Deposition. In this process, a mixture of hydrogen and methane gas is placed in a chamber with a seed crystal. A microwave power heats the chamber to a high temperature, which excites the gas making diamond grows on the seed crystal.
Do some Lab-Made Diamonds come in colors?
Yes! Lab grown diamonds do come in colors.
Do Lab-Grown Diamonds sparkle?
Cut is the factor that affects a diamond sparkle and brilliance. Lab grown diamonds will sparkle just like natural diamonds, as long as the lab grown diamond is cut and faceted like an excellent cut diamond.
Will your jewelry tarnish after showering or swimming?
No. We only use solid gold (not vermeil or plated gold) in our jewelry which makes them perfect for everyday wear. However, we recommend you take off your jewelry before showering and swimming. Besides showering and swimming, you can wear our jewelry 24/7 without worrying about tarnishing.
